7 January, 2025, marks a significant milestone in the life of a Nigerian sports icon, Dr Raufu Bolaji Ojo-Oba, as he celebrates his 70th birthday. This remarkable individual has left an indelible mark on the Nigerian sports landscape, particularly in the realm of football.
Dr Ojo-Oba has exhibited versatility and expertise throughout his career, serving in a variety of roles, including Commissioner of Sports in Oyo State, Instructor and Commissioner for the Confederation of African Football.
Dr Ojo-Oba who hails from Ibadanland, was born on 7 January, 1955. He obtained his first degree in French from the University of Lagos and master’s in the same discipline from the same University and later earned his master’s and doctorate in Sports Administration from the University of Ibadan.
Dr Ojo-Oba began his career as a Sports Administrator in the 1980s. He worked as a Sports Officer in the National Sports Commission (NSC), Lagos, before becoming the Commissioner for Sports in Oyo State.
Dr Ojo-Oba’s illustrious career spans several decades, during which he has demonstrated exceptional leadership, versatility, and expertise. His tenure as Secretary-General of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) from January 15, 2007 to July 26, 2010 is instrumental in shaping the country’s football scene. His contributions to the development of Nigerian football are undeniable, and his legacy continues to inspire future generations.
Throughout his career, Dr Ojo-Oba has exhibited a commitment to excellence, serving in various capacities, especially as a member of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) Committees.

Though there were challenges, Dr Ojo-Oba remains a significant figure in Nigerian football. As he celebrates his 70th birthday, his contributions to sports are undeniable, and his legacy continues to shape the country’s football narrative.
As I celebrate his milestone birthday, I honour not only Dr Ojo-Oba’s achievements but also his dedication to the development of Nigerian sports. His impact extends beyond the football pitch, inspiring countless individuals and leaving a lasting legacy.
