HISTORY: How the Sacred Kingdom of Egbedi Welcomed Timi to Establish Ede

EGBEDI, YORUBA — In a captivating interview with The Mogjournals, His Royal Majesty, Oba Abdul Azeez Muhydeen Olaniyi, (Ajagungbade 1) the Elegbedi of Egbedi Kingdom, opened up about the rich and mystic history of his town, recounting a heritage that has been passed down through generations.

The origins of Egbedi, he explained, trace back to the migration of his great-grandfather, Òpòjólàdé, from Ile-Ife, the ancestral home of the Yoruba people.

Upon arrival in the land that would become Egbedi, Òpòjólàdé carried with him the sacred crown, “Ade Sẹsẹ Ẹfun.”

However, his plans to settle were immediately challenged by powerful and unruly spirits that dominated the area.

In a remarkable display of determination, Òpòjólàdé engaged these supernatural beings in battle, particularly their leader, Ata, who eventually surrendered after a fierce confrontation.

In exchange for his life, Ata promised to coexist with the people and protect the town, marking the beginning of a centuries-old alliance between man and spirit.

Ata, now worshiped as a protective deity, became a revered figure in the town’s cultural and spiritual landscape.

This unique aspect of Egbedi’s heritage not only defines the town’s history but also predates the founding of Ede by Timi Agbale.

True to Yoruba customs of unity, the Egbedi people even granted land to Timi Agbale, setting the stage for Ede’s establishment.

During the interview, Oba Olaniyi praised Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, for his efforts toward sustainable development.

He extended prayers for the continued peace and prosperity of Egbedi and Osun State, while The Mogjournals echoed these sentiments for the well-being of the town’s people, both near and far.
