The much-anticipated upgrade of the Samuel Ladoke Akintola International Airport, popularly known as IBADAN AIRPORT, is progressing swiftly, with the Oyo State Government and relevant stakeholders gearing up to transform it into a key aviation hub in the southwest region.
In a recent interview, Honourable Abimbola Adekanmbi, chairman of the airport upgrade committee, provided insights into the ongoing project, the challenges, and the future prospects.
The project, which aims to bring the Ibadan airport up to international standards, involves the extension of the current runway from 2,400 meters to 3,000 meters and widening it to accommodate larger aircraft.
The apron space is also being expanded, and critical upgrades such as enhanced lighting, firefighting facilities, and fencing will ensure that the airport meets international safety standards.
In response to concerns about the project’s N41 billion budget, Hon. Adekanmbi emphasized that the investment is critical for the state’s development.
“People need to understand that projects like this are for the future.”
“Ibadan is the administrative capital of the southwest, and for us to keep lagging behind without an international airport is not acceptable,” he remarked.
He compared the project to similar airports in Kano and Enugu, both of which have enjoyed upgrades and international recognition.
He further addressed questions about the need for an international airport, emphasizing the convenience it would offer residents of Oyo State and neighboring regions.

“Imagine being able to leave your home in Ibadan for an international flight to Karachi or London without traveling to Lagos first.
“The reduction in road mishaps and travel stress is a major plus for the people,” he explained.
He also highlighted the economic potential the airport upgrade would unlock for the state, particularly through cargo services.
“Cargo contributes to 35% of global aviation revenue, and with Oyo State being a powerhouse in agriculture, the airport will be a hub for exporting goods like poultry and skins.
The state stands to benefit immensely from this project in terms of tax revenue and job creation,” he added.
The airport upgrade is set to be completed within 12 months, with Adekanmbi and his team confident that they will meet the timeline.
He assured citizens that every naira will be spent judiciously, with reputable contractors overseeing the project under the watchful eye of aviation experts, including Dr. Wale Babalakin.
The Oyo State Government, under Governor Seyi Makinde, has expressed strong support for the initiative.
The Governor has been described as “forward-thinking,” having supported the airport long before assuming office, even personally funding some maintenance work.
This project aligns with Makinde’s broader vision of developing Oyo State into a regional economic hub, complete with intermodal transport systems linking air, road, and rail networks.
“This project is not just for today, but for future generations,” Adekanmbi concluded. “Children yet unborn will benefit from this international airport, and Oyo State will finally take its place on the map as a major regional capital.”
