A retiring Senior Deputy Registrar of the University of Ibadan and human resource expert, Mr. Tijani Imhodu Musa has asserted that the Registry is the backbone of university administration and management because it ensures that policies are not only formulated but effectively implemented.
He made the assertion while delivering a Valedictory Lecture to mark his retirement from the university upon attaining the retirement age of 65 years.
His lecture entitled: “Forty-five Years of Service: A Story of Strength, Resilience and Abundant Grace of the Almighty” recounted his 45 years of meritorious service to the university, lessons to be drawn by administrators and recommendations on how to revamp university administration.
Mr Musa submitted that the university registry ensures that university resources are not only properly earmarked but personnel, who are competent in their craft, are deployed for effective and timely appropriation for the actualization of set objectives.
The Senior Deputy Registrar stated that he had witnessed the complete transformation of university administration, yet the premier registry has survived these transitions and is still soaring high.
He noted that university administration has not been without challenges while navigating policy changes and managing industrial actions to the adaptation of technological advancements.
Mr Musa reflected on the state of university education and university governance in Nigeria and decried the inadequate funding, brain drain, and corruption, which have caused a decline in the administration of public universities which struggle to fund their day-to-day operations, leading to deteriorated infrastructure and inadequate facilities.
He observed that addressing these challenges would require a collaborative effort from the government, universities, and other stakeholders to ensure that Nigerian universities can provide quality education and produce graduates who can compete globally.
The Valedictorian suggested that universities must anticipate future challenges, such as the integration of artificial intelligence in administration, data-driven decision making and the increasing demands of a globalised education sector, with its attendant threats to the university system.
He charged administrators of the University of Ibadan to be more professional and continue to build on the foundation laid on adaptability, innovation, and a commitment to academic excellence while navigating the complex terrain of university administration.
Mr Musa encouraged up-coming administrators to lead by example, empower others, communicate effectively, foster a positive work culture, stay focused on the mission, be data informed, take calculated risks, engage stakeholders, build strong relationships and develop strategic partnerships.
The Senior Deputy Registrar acknowledged that the University of Ibadan has been more than a workplace; it has been a home and the stage on which the most meaningful chapters of his life have unfolded.
The valedictorian listed humility, hardwork, and resilience as some of the lessons he learnt in the course of his career as a university administrator, which have been pivotal to his stability and consistent advancement, despite all odds.
He identified teamwork, communication, and empathy as essential components of office engagement, adding that their importance can not be overstated.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, mni, FAS, fspsp, was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Professor P. O. Olapegba, FNPA, fspsp, who described Mr T. I. Musa as an astute administrator who approached assignments with singleness of purpose, exemplified loyalty, and dedication to duty.
On behalf of the university, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor appreciated Mr Musa for his sacrifices, commitment, and inestimable services to the university.
The Registrar, Mr. G. O Saliu, fspsp, said Mr. T. I. Musa was an integral part of the university for over four decades and would be leaving an indelible mark in the institution.
Mr Saliu stated that Mr Musa’s unwavering commitment, profound expertise in the affairs of the Registry, and tireless dedication have enriched countless lives and significantly contributed to the growth and development of the University of Ibadan.
He stated that the valedictory lecture therefore, provided the university community a unique opportunity to reflect on Mr Musa’s distinguished career, glean insights from his vast experience, and appreciate the profound impact he made on all and sundry.
