The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, mni, FAS, has appreciated the usefulness of Science Laboratory Technology.
He described it as a versatile course that cuts across many prime sectors such as education, agriculture, industries, medicine, engineering, national security, and ICT.
Professor Adebowale spoke through the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic, Professor Aderonke M. Baiyeroju, at the opening of the 4th Biennial conferebnce/workshop of the UI branch of the Association of Science Laboratory Technologists of Nigeria (ASLTON).
The Vice-Chancellor said Laboratory Technologists ensure standard knowledge and exposure to equipment and promote the highest standards of competence, practice, and conduct.
He stated that the Governing Council of the University recently approved the Master of Science degree programme in Science Laboratory Technology in a bid to enhance the knowledge of the SLT graduates yearning for further higher academic knowledge in their field.
The Chairperson of the UI Branch of ASLTON, Mrs Elizabeth O. Joel had earlier stated that the theme of this year’s conference like the others before it was coined around Technologists and their role in the field of science, technology, engineering, and medicine.
This, she said, was to enable the technologists to stay focused with the determination to bring the required development to the nation’s technological advancement.
She assured that the members of the Association would neither relent nor rest on their oars as professionals to seek academic knowledge that sufficiently fits into technological advancement.
The theme of the 3- day conference is ” Sustainable Laboratory Practice: A Key In-Depth in Nanotechnology Research and Product Development for National Advancement.
Professor Lateef Agbaje of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology delivered the Keynote Address.
Goodwill messages were received from the Registrar, Deans of Science, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy, Agriculture, and the Head of Department of Computer Science.
The Chairperson of Oyo State Branch of ASLTON was represented by Mr Emmanuel Oyewole. The Chairman, Comrade Yahaya, and the General Secretary of the UI Branch of the NAAT , Comrade Rauf, were in attendance.
The Oyo State Commissioner of Education, Science and Technology, Professor Abdulwaheed Salihu, was represented by Mr Idowu Adebayo Adekunle, the Director of Applied Science and Technology. Mr Adewale Oluwole, the Director of Higher and Continuing Education, as well as Mr Akande, a Deputy Director, were also at the opening ceremony.
